People have been using glass for over 3,000 years. Its primary component is sand, it is unreactive with food and other products, easy to clean, durable, and completely recyclable. The modern glass used in most of today’s applications is about 75 percent silica (sand) with sodium carbonate (soda), calcium oxide (lime), and other additives. The added ingredients lower the melting temperature of the sand and increase durability. The process of turning these simple components into glass starts with mining and purifying the components.
Most factories get sand to make windows from Utah, Ohio, California, Arizona and a handful of other states. The more pure the sand, the better it is for glass making. Many tons of it are shipped to a glass factory and loaded into silos by incline conveyors specially designed to move sand. The ingredients then go to a furnace that mixes and heats them to over 2,800 degrees F. Broken recycled glass, also called cullet, is often added to the mixture.
When the components are melted together and bubbles are removed, the glass can be shaped. For bottles, compressed air forces the molten glass into molds. They are then cooled slowly and evenly to avoid cracking. They are then sent to other factories as packaging for many other products.
To create large panes of glass used to manufacture Amsco Windows is an interesting challenge. In this process, the machine pours the glass into a bath of liquid tin. The glass, being less dense, will rise to the top creating a thin sheet. While the glass is still malleable it is taken on a conveyor to cool. Here, machines regulate the thickness of the glass and make sure it’s uniform. Once the glass sheets are completely cooled they are scored and divided and checked for defects. They can then be sent around the country to window makers and furniture fabricators.
